Principles of the Prevention & Control of Infection in Health Care Setting

Protecting people from infection is a really important part of providing high-quality care, especially as some life-threatening infections can spread easily within care environments.

Course Overview

About 300,000 patients develop an infection in England each year while being treated by the NHS. In order to provide safe and effective care, infection control and prevention should be part of everyday practice for anyone working in a health and social care environment, regardless of role.

This course covers procedures and regulations surrounding infection control, as well as the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

What you'll learn

This course is made up of 8 units:

  • Understand the purpose and principles of infection control and the procedures
  • Understand how regulations inform policy and practice
  • Understand roles, responsibilities, principles and processes in relation to cleaning, decontamination and waste management
  • Understand the role of risk assessments
  • Learn the importance of maintaining a clean environment
  • Learn the sterilisation process
  • Learn how to safely handle laundry
  • Learn how to safely handle sharps
Eligibility Criteria
This course is government funded, you must meet the following criteria to be able to study for free:
  • You must currently live in England    
  • You must have been resident in the UK/EU for 3+ years, for purposes other than study    
  • You must be over the age of 19  
  • You must not be on an apprenticeship

There is a £125 cancellation fee if you enrol and do not complete or withdraw from the course. This fee is to cover administration costs.

This course is funded by the government's Adult Education Budget, which means you may be able to study for free.

The duration of this course is seven weeks.
